As prom season approaches, a united effort by parents and school officials in Plantation, Florida aims to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving among high school students. This initiative is particularly focused on ensuring the safety of students as they celebrate one of their most unforgettable milestones.
Visual Demonstrations Highlight Dangers of Impaired Driving
During the event, attendees were confronted with a striking demonstration designed to illustrate the potentially dire consequences of impaired driving. A mock car crash scene was set up, featuring a vehicle that appeared severely damaged, with first responders using the Jaws of Life tool in an effort to extricate a simulated victim.
Student-Led Initiative Drives Home the Message
Harlee Ross, a student at American Heritage, played a pivotal role in organizing this impactful presentation in collaboration with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Plantation Fire Rescue. “You can’t prevent accidents like this from happening. You can prevent getting behind the wheel while impaired or distracted and harming the life of yourself and others around you,” said Ross, emphasizing the power of personal choice in driving safety.
Urgent Message from Experts and Victims’ Families
Heather Geronemus from MADD stressed the importance of outreach to students during this critical time of year. “It’s so critical for us to get in front of students, especially as we approach the time of prom and graduation, to teach them about the very real dangers of drinking and driving,” she noted. The influence of their messaging was further amplified by testimonials from victims’ families, including Amani Criales and her husband, Bryan.
Amani recounted the devastating impact that a drunk driver had on their family, stating, “A man just ruined the lives of an entire family all because he decided to drink and drive.” This profound statement communicates the lasting effects such reckless decisions can impart, as Bryan suffers from a traumatic brain injury resulting from an incident on I-95 that killed his sister, Carmen.
Creating Awareness Among Students
Ross echoed the sentiment, stating, “It’s truly eye-opening to show the students how impacted your life can become by getting behind the wheel or getting in the car of somebody who’s impaired.” Geronemus added, “It’s really easy to separate yourself from this issue, but really drunk driving is all around us; two out of three people will be impacted in their lives.”
Upcoming Fundraising Event
In support of further educational programs, a walk and 5K run is scheduled for April in Downtown Fort Lauderdale. This event will help raise funds for initiatives like those offered by MADD, aiming to prevent impaired driving and promote safer communities.
