Star forward Matthew Tkachuk has been sidelined since early February due to an injury incurred while representing the United States at the 4 Nations Face-Off. Defenseman Aaron Ekblad is set to miss the first two games of the playoffs due to a 20-game suspension for violating drug policies. Additionally, newly acquired forward Brad Marchand has yet to make his debut with the team post-trade due to injury.

Strong Performance Amid Adversity

Despite the absence of these pivotal players, the Panthers have demonstrated remarkable tenacity. They have secured nine victories in their first 14 games since the NHL resumed play following the 4 Nations break, maintaining their position at the top of the Atlantic Division with only 11 regular-season games remaining.

According to Sam Bennett, who has been instrumental with 12 points during this period, the team’s ability to cope with the loss of key players is crucial. “You’re going to be down important guys at important times of the year,” Bennett stated. “In the playoffs, especially, there are times that you lose guys, and it’s up to us to step up.” Bennett’s performance stands alongside captain Aleksander Barkov, who ties with him in points, trailing only Sam Reinhart, who has accrued 13 points.

Defensive Excellence

During this stretch, the Panthers’ defensive unit has been stellar, conceding just two goals per game—the lowest average in the NHL. Washington Capitals coach Spencer Carbery commended their defensive strategy, highlighting their exceptional ability to protect vital areas in the defense zone. “What separates them is they protect the net front and the slot better than anybody in the NHL,” Carbery remarked.

Forward Jonah Gadjovich praised Jones’ impact both on and off the ice, stating, “He’s been great on the ice and off the ice. He’s a great guy, obviously a great player, so we’re so happy to have him and his leadership around.”
