Community in Mourning After Tragic Case of Child Abuse in Florida
TAVARES, Florida—A tragic case has emerged from Tavares, where a 10-year-old boy, Xavier Williams, passed away following a prolonged battle in the hospital due to critical injuries. The State Attorney’s Office has confirmed that his mother, Kimberley Mills, and her boyfriend, Andre Walker, are facing second-degree murder charges in connection with the incident.
Details of the Incident
According to local authorities, Xavier suffered severe abuse prior to his hospitalization. Detective Courtney Sullivan from Tavares Police described the situation: “It is clear to this agency that this child underwent gruesome abuse. He is covered head to toe in various size bruises that are in various stages of healing.”
Timeline of Events
Last month, Mills brought Xavier to the hospital, reportedly administering CPR before hospital staff took over. Notably, after learning that police were notified, both Mills and Walker left the hospital soon after their arrival. Mills later returned with her other son, but police reported that Walker did not accompany her.
Investigation and Charges
Mills, who is licensed as a registered nurse in Florida, refused to answer questions related to Xavier’s injuries at the hospital. Initially charged with aggravated child abuse, her charges have since been escalated to second-degree murder. Walker is also facing similar charges as the investigation continues. Tavares police have indicated that the couple’s other child is now in the care of the Department of Children and Families.
Community Response
The horrific nature of this case has prompted a community response, with plans for a candlelight vigil scheduled for March 29 at Wooton Park in downtown Tavares to honor Xavier’s life. Attendees are encouraged to wear blue, which was the young boy’s favorite color.
Next Steps
Investigators are continuing to gather evidence from Mills’ residence in an effort to build a comprehensive case regarding the alleged abuse. The children’s biological father has reportedly traveled to be with his children during this difficult time.
