Pembroke Pines, Florida – A troubling situation persists in a Pembroke Pines condo community, where residents continue to face hazards from golf balls originating from a nearby city-owned golf course. Despite a previous commitment from city officials to address the issue after an injury incident, concrete action remains forthcoming.

The Incident That Sparked Concern

James Grimes, a resident of Park Place, shared that his experience is emblematic of the dangers residents face. Shortly after moving in last year, he was struck in the face by a golf ball, leading to a significant injury. “The ball literally knocked me out,” Grimes recounted, depicting a moment when he lost consciousness and was left with blood on his hands after the blow.

Promises Yet to be Fulfilled

In response to Grimes’ testimony to the city commission last June, Mayor Angelo Castillo assured the community that protective netting would be installed to shield residents from errant shots. “I have spoken to the city manager… He is going to accelerate the installation,” Castillo promised. However, nearly nine months later, no progress has been made in implementing these safety measures.

Financial Hurdles and Delays

The mayor recently explained that funding for the netting was linked to a proposed $230 million bond measure aimed at city improvements, which was rejected by voters in March. As a result, the community is now left without a clear solution for funding the necessary safety measures.

Local Officials Respond to the Situation

Commissioner Jay Schwartz, who has past ties to the building where Grimes resides, expressed his discontent with the lack of action regarding the mayor’s commitment. “The mayor made a commitment that he hasn’t delivered on,” Schwartz stated. He suggested that enhancing greenery in the area with trees and hedges could serve as a natural barrier while city officials explore other preventive measures.

Ongoing Risks and Residents’ Concerns

Many residents have echoed Grimes’ frustrations, citing close calls and damage to their property. One resident, Marcia Storm, reflected on a near-miss, stating that a golf ball narrowly avoided hitting her in the head. Others, such as Robert Heath and Nancy Taylor, have experienced property damage, with one resident reporting shattered car windows due to stray golf balls.

Grimes noted that even during a recent walk, a golf ball landed dangerously close behind him, underscoring the ongoing risk faced by those in the community. “Anyone that walks that path is literally putting their life in danger,” he asserted.
