Trump’s Sanctions Warning on Iranian Oil Amid Nuclear Negotiations Delay
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — In a striking warning, President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that the U.S. would impose sanctions on any individual or nation purchasing Iranian oil. This stern message surfaced following the postponement of planned discussions regarding Iran’s advancing nuclear program.
Trump’s Directive
Through a social media post, Trump declared, “All purchases of Iranian Oil, or Petrochemical products, must stop, NOW!” He further emphasized that buyers of Iranian products would find themselves unable to conduct business with the United States.
Postponement of Nuclear Talks
The sanctions announcement followed a statement from Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, who detailed online that the upcoming talks regarding Iran’s nuclear program that were set for Saturday, May 3rd, would be rescheduled due to logistical complications. “New dates will be announced when mutually agreed,” he stated.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei confirmed the postponement was at Oman’s request but reiterated Iran’s commitment to achieving “a fair and lasting agreement.”
U.S. Participation in Talks
A source familiar with the negotiations indicated that the U.S. had not officially confirmed its participation in a fourth round of talks in Rome. Nonetheless, the U.S. negotiators expect discussions to take place “in the near future.” This information was shared anonymously as discussions remain confidential.
Context of the Nuclear Negotiations
The ongoing negotiations aim to limit Iran’s nuclear capabilities in exchange for lifting stringent U.S. sanctions, which have been a point of contention for nearly fifty years. Discussions have involved key figures, including Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff.
Escalating Tensions
Trump’s administration has also warned of potential airstrikes targeting Iran should a comprehensive deal fail to materialize. Iranian officials have increasingly indicated their capabilities to pursue nuclear armament as they enrich uranium to levels nearing weapons-grade.
The original nuclear agreement from 2015 successfully imposed limitations on Iran’s nuclear activities. However, following the U.S.’s withdrawal from this deal in 2018, hostilities have intensified within the region. Issues in the Middle East are further exacerbated by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
U.S. Military Actions Against Houthi Rebels
In related military developments, the U.S. has continued its airstrike campaign, known as “Operation Rough Rider,” against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are supported by Iran. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth issued a strong warning to Iran, stating, “Message to IRAN: We see your LETHAL support to The Houthis. We know exactly what you are doing.” He added that consequences would be forthcoming at a time and place of the U.S.’s choosing.
Recent Violence in Iran
This week’s talks unfolded under the shadow of a tragic incident at an Iranian port, where an explosion resulted in the deaths of at least 70 people and left over 1,000 injured.
