Investigation Underway Following Discovery of Elderly Woman’s Remains in Titusville
TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Authorities in Central Florida have confirmed the identity of remains found earlier this week belonging to 72-year-old Jesse Kirk, who had been reported missing after failing to meet a friend for a scheduled morning walk.
Timeline of Events
Kirk was last seen on March 4, 2025, at approximately 8:30 a.m. Her family reported her missing after she did not show up for her morning routine. The following day, her remains were discovered together with her burnt vehicle, a Lincoln SUV, about 20 miles from her home in Titusville.
The vehicle was located after firefighters responded to reports of a fire. Witnesses reported seeing a red Honda SUV, which was linked to a suspect, David Barber, an ex-boyfriend of one of Kirk’s nieces.
Arrest of Suspect
Investigators apprehended 35-year-old David Barber based on compelling evidence. ‘The investigation became increasingly suspicious when a niece of Ms. Kirk arrived on the scene and identified the red Honda SUV belonging to Barber,’ stated Titusville Police Cmdr. Tyler Wright.
Surveillance and witness accounts indicated that Barber was observed entering and exiting Kirk’s vehicle during the night hours preceding the discovery of the fire.
Investigative Developments
Following the vehicle’s discovery, additional witnesses indicated they saw Barber leaving the area where the SUV was ablaze. ‘He was seen on foot after the fire but may have been picked up by someone,’ noted Titusville Police Detective Sgt. Bryan Nelson.
When police located Barber later in the day, he exhibited injuries consistent with burns and scratches, suggesting he was involved in the incident. Although he faces charges for vehicular theft, he has not yet been charged in relation to Kirk’s disappearance or death.
Community Impact and Ongoing Efforts
The discovery of Kirk’s remains has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an outpouring of grief and calls for justice. ‘Our goal has been and will continue to be to bring justice and closure to Ms. Kirk’s family during this incredibly difficult time,’ said Detective Nelson.
