(CNN) – Tiger Woods’ son Charlie’s spectacular hole-in-one wasn’t enough to defeat two-time major champion Bernhard Langer and his son Jason at the PNC Championship on Sunday. It is a 2-day, 36-hole tournament. 20 major champions and their families will play in a scramble format.
At the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida, Team Woods and Team Langer both started the final round of the tournament tied at -13, but 18 holes weren’t enough to separate the teams.
In the end, however, Team Langer won the competition for the second year in a row, and the sixth victory for 67-year-old team anchor Bernhardt.
Charlie Woods’ hole-in-one on the fourth hole moved Team Woods into the lead, a move that resonated with proud father Tiger and will remain on his highlight reel for years to come. Probably.
The Langers were steady and relentless throughout the round, tying Team Woods multiple times before Woods regained the lead. On Sunday’s back nine, Team Langer birdied eight of nine holes, giving them a one-shot lead over Team Woods, with both teams finishing at -28 after 36 holes to force a playoff.
As both teams replayed the 18th hole, Tiger Woods’ approach shot stopped just outside the green, opening the door for Jason Langer to take advantage with a shot in the middle of the green, about 15 feet to the center of the green. It remained. Flagpole.
Charlie Woods made the best putt for Team Woods, but his attempt was a little too fast-paced and ripped out as Charlie went through the hole on his knees in agony.
Jason Langer missed a try and it all fell to Bernhardt. Showing the nerve of a two-time Masters champion, Langer sank the putt to win the tournament.
Even the disappointing loss did not dampen young Woods’ spirits.
“I mean, it was awesome,” Woods told NBC afterward.
“Today was the most fun I’ve ever had because no one made a mistake. And on top of that, I got an ace. I don’t think you can top that. It was the best.”
Bernhard Langer, on the other hand, won cleanly.
“I really enjoyed playing with Tiger and Charlie today,” Langer said after accepting the trophy.
“They’re such great competitors and great people. It was fun to watch them together. And when Charlie got that hole-in-one, when my son got his first hole-in-one, there was nothing like it. I’ve never seen Tiger so happy. It was a great moment and we were thrilled to be a part of it.”
Charlie Woods steals the show with first-ever hole-in-one
Tiger Woods may be the greatest golfer of all time, but the best shot of the day belonged to his son Charlie.
On the par-3 fourth hole, Charlie’s tee shot landed softly on the green that rolled into the hole, resulting in a hole-in-one. The 15-year-old was walking off the tee, not realizing at first that his ball had landed in the eagle.
As the crowd roared, Charlie shyly asked, “Are you in?”
Proud father Tiger was all smiles as he celebrated with a hug and a playful push from Woods.
The ace was the young Woods’ first ever hole-in-one, catapulting Team Woods into first place in the tournament.
Charlie told Golf Channel as he walked toward the fourth green. I didn’t think it went in. No one will believe it until they go and see it. ”
Even after a grueling day, Tiger was still in awe of his son’s incredible play on Sunday.
“That was one of the highlights we’ve had so far, we’re talking about him making his first eagle on the previous hole,” Woods said. “And now he just got his first hole-in-one. It was a magical two-hole stretch. I’m so happy he and we enjoyed it as a family.”
