Recent headlines have captured a remarkable story emerging from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGK) in Miami-Dade. This case involves a female inmate, Daisy Link, who is facing charges of second-degree murder and found herself pregnant while incarcerated.

The Unique Circumstance

At 29 years old, Link described her shocking experience of becoming pregnant in custody. “It’s a real twist, it is,” she noted, reflecting on the bizarre nature of the situation, likening it to a plot from a film.

Despite being in custody for over two years, it was a connection made through unconventional means that resulted in her pregnancy. The father, identified through DNA testing as Joan Depaz, is also facing serious charges of murder and was an inmate at TGK as well.

A Shocking Method

Link and Depaz, who communicated exclusively via air vents and notes, devised a plan to conceive. Their discussions flourished during their prolonged isolation, leading to a relationship that culminated in Link’s pregnancy.

Describing the method, Depaz said, “I put the semen in Saran Wrap every day like five times a day for like a month straight.” Link then transported this material through their vent line, using it in a way that resulted in her becoming pregnant after a few attempts.

Expert Insight

According to Dr. Fernando Akerman, medical director of the Fertility Center of Miami, while the chances of achieving pregnancy through this unconventional means were slim, they were not impossible. “We estimate that probably their chances were less than five percent,” he advised, confirming the uniqueness of this case.

The Birth

On June 19, their daughter was born, which Link referred to as a “miracle baby.” As both parents remain in separate detention facilities, they continue to maintain their connection through phone calls and video visits, sharing the joys of parenthood.

Link articulated her hopes for her child, saying, “She could be anything. I think that she’s gonna be something great.”

Investigation into Security Breaches

Given the unusual nature of this incident, the Miami-Dade Corrections Department has launched an internal affairs investigation to determine how these events transpired without the awareness of correctional staff.
