Quinn Ewers Joins Miami Dolphins: Rookie Journey Begins

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Quinn Ewers, the Miami Dolphins’ newest quarterback, finds himself starting his professional journey after being selected 231st overall in the recent NFL Draft. Despite not expecting to fall to the seventh round, Ewers is ready to embrace the challenge ahead of him.

Facing the Challenge

Now part of a competitive depth chart, Ewers is currently positioned behind established starter Tua Tagovailoa and newly acquired free agent Zach Wilson. The Ohio native reflects on the unique situation of being the last quarterback taken in the draft, stating, “I didn’t expect to fall as low as I did. It is what it is at the end of the day, and I have the same opportunity that everybody else does.”

A Promising Background

Highly regarded as the top high school quarterback at the time of his recruitment, Ewers initially joined Ohio State before transferring to Texas. His collegiate career was noteworthy; during his time at Texas, Ewers led the Longhorns to a Big 12 championship and achieved two College Football Playoff appearances, accumulating an impressive total of 9,128 passing yards and 68 touchdowns.

However, injuries have posed challenges for Ewers, notably an abdomen strain in the past season, which opened the door for backup quarterback Arch Manning to receive playing time. Despite these setbacks, his ability to perform under pressure has gained attention from NFL scouts.

Dolphins’ Confidence

General manager Chris Grier praised Ewers’ competitive spirit and resilience in overcoming adversities during college, including managing pressure from incoming talent like Manning. “We talked to coach (Steve) Sarkisian about him, and ‘Sark’ really likes and was high on him,” Grier noted.

Ambitions in the NFL

As Ewers embarks on his professional career, his immediate goal is to master the complex offensive playbook under head coach Mike McDaniel. He recognizes the importance of establishing himself in a rookie environment, asserting, “Right now it’s my responsibility to lead all these rookies.” With aspirations of making a noticeable impact, Ewers is keen on earning the trust of his teammates.

The Role of Backup Quarterback

The backup quarterback role is crucial for the Dolphins, especially given Tagovailoa’s history of injuries. Last season, Tagovailoa only played in 11 games, prompting the team to utilize multiple quarterbacks. Grier addressed this need promptly during free agency, securing Wilson to a one-year contract, setting the stage for an intriguing competition for the backup position.
