Successful Release of Rehabilitated Sea Turtles in Florida
On Wednesday afternoon, nineteen sea turtles were successfully released into the Atlantic Ocean near Jacksonville, Florida, following a rehabilitation period in Missouri. These turtles had previously suffered from cold water temperatures while in New England.
Rehabilitation Journey
The turtles were transported to Florida after receiving care at the Johnny Morris Sea Turtle Center in Springfield, Missouri. This operation was facilitated by the nonprofit organization Turtles Fly Too, which specializes in assisting cold-stunned sea turtles.
Initially, twenty loggerhead and Kemp’s ridley turtles were brought from the New England Aquarium in Boston to the rehabilitation center in Springfield. Unfortunately, one turtle did not survive its critical condition, leaving 19 that underwent treatment.
Impact of Cold Stunning
The turtles spent over three months under expert care due to cold stunning, a condition that arises when rapid drops in water temperature result in health issues like pneumonia, hypothermia, and dehydration. The team of veterinarians at the center provided continuous monitoring and support for their recovery.
Over recent months, a significant number of sea turtles along the Atlantic Coast have been affected by cold stunning, prompting similar rehabilitative transfers to facilities in Florida.
Monitoring and Future Conservation
During their release at Little Talbot Island State Park, each turtle was equipped with specialized satellite tracking devices. These devices will enable conservation scientists to monitor the turtles’ movements and health conditions as they reintegrate into their natural habitat.
