MIRAMAR, Fla. (WSVN) – Children worked with police officers to buy Christmas presents.
The Miramar Police Department participated in Target’s annual Heroes and Helpers program, which brought smiles to many faces this season.
Each student received a gift card and worked with first responders to find the perfect Christmas gift.
Students were able to purchase gifts for themselves as well as friends and family.
All attendees responded to the partnership and holiday shopping.
“I feel blessed to have this opportunity,” Joseph Tavares said. “I just want to buy some clothes and maybe some gifts for them.”
“I’m going to buy reading and anime stuff,” Cameron Dumas said.
“I was looking for clothes and a gift for a friend and I looked around the store and chose what I was looking for,” Yamile Etkins said.
“I had to look around the store to choose what I was looking for,” Yaioke-Etkins said.
Officers in attendance said the event focused on promoting positive relationships between police and the community.
“One of the great things about events like this is that you get to interact with the school resource officers and that we are a support system. We want to build that bond from the very early years of attending school to adulthood,” said Miramar Police Department Deputy Chief Shekela Buckner-Ingram.
Target has been helping law enforcement make these connections with communities since 2009.
