MIRAMAR, Fla. (WSVN) – A Miramar Police Department officer has been arrested on child sexual abuse charges, authorities announced.
George Richardson is charged with lewd and lascivious written communication, using a child in a sexual act, and harmful communication with a minor.
The 37-year-old, who had been with the department for three years, was taken into custody Wednesday in West Park.
Officials announced that Mr. Richardson has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
Miramar Police Chief Dellish Moss provided the following statement to 7News.
“We are very disappointed to announce that George Richardson, a three-year employee of the Miramar Police Department, has been arrested by the Broward County Sheriff’s Department’s Public Corruption Unit.
When an individual who has sworn to uphold the law is accused of violating that sacred oath, it not only undermines that individual’s integrity but casts a shadow on the entire profession. The trust placed in law enforcement officers is paramount, and violating that trust is unacceptable.
Mr. Richardson, like all individuals charged with a crime, is entitled to the presumption of innocence, but to be clear, he has been relieved of police service with immediate effect. That’s true. We value transparency and accountability and are cooperating fully with BSO to ensure a thorough investigation and a fair process for all involved.
At the same time, it is important to extend sympathy and support to the alleged victims. We are committed to making sure they have all the support they need during this incredibly difficult time.
The Miramar Police Department remains committed to its mission of serving the community with integrity. ”
