Pregnancy Behind Bars: A Disturbing Case at Miami-Dade Jail
Miami-Dade jail officials have concluded their investigation into an extraordinary case involving an inmate who became pregnant while incarcerated. The case has garnered significant attention, likened by some to a plot from a Lifetime movie, as it reveals severe lapses in correctional facility security.
The Inmates Involved
The inmate, Daisy Link, 24, gave birth following a reported pregnancy conceived with fellow inmate Joan Depaz. What makes this situation particularly unusual is that the two women never met face-to-face. Their communication reportedly occurred through a vent system within the facility.
The Investigation Findings
Miami-Dade Corrections took an extended period to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident. Their report substantiated accounts from the inmates about how the pregnancy occurred, raising significant questions about the facility’s security measures. Despite this, jail officials have stated there was “insufficient evidence to substantiate staff misconduct.”
A Brazen Security Breach
During an interview, Link expressed the belief that her situation could have been avoided if the corrections facility had maintained proper oversight. “They should actually thank me. I found a huge breach in their security. I haven’t gotten a ‘thank you’ yet,” she remarked.
The Method of Conception
Depaz detailed an unconventional method used to achieve conception. “I put the semen in Saran Wrap every day like five times a day for like a month straight,” she explained. Link further described the method used: “He would roll it up almost like a cigarette and he would attach it to the line that we had in the vent, and I would pull it through. From there, I had placed it inside of… yeast infection applicators… and then administered it.”
Security Overhaul
In light of these revelations, the Miami-Dade Corrections took steps to enhance security. Changes included:
- Implementing new procedures to limit the circulation of applicators and tips previously used by inmates.
- Rearranging inmate housing levels so that male and female inmates would no longer share the same level, thereby reducing the potential for illicit communications through vents.
Current Status of the Inmates
Joan Depaz is no longer in county custody, having pleaded guilty to murder last month and receiving a 25-year prison sentence. Meanwhile, Daisy Link remains incarcerated, facing charges related to a separate murder case.
