Ryan Weathers to Begin Season on Injured List
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Marlins face a tough start to the season as pitcher Ryan Weathers will be sidelined with a left forearm strain.
Injury Details
Weathers, who experienced discomfort shortly after his recent spring training appearance, is expected to be unavailable for four to six weeks. The Marlins’ new manager, Clayton McCullough, confirmed that the left-hander has a mild flexor strain, but importantly, his ulnar collateral ligament is intact.
Performances Prior to Injury
During the spring training period, Weathers recorded one earned run over 11 1/3 innings across four starts, showcasing his potential with 11 strikeouts, despite issuing eight walks. His last outing against the New York Mets highlighted his skill, as he pitched four solid innings.
Previous Season Overview
Last season, Weathers had a record of 5-6 with a commendable 3.63 ERA during 16 starts for Miami. The 25-year-old was anticipated to play a crucial role as the team’s No. 2 starter behind ace Sandy Alcantara, the 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner, who is returning this year following Tommy John surgery recovery.
Additional Injuries in the Rotation
The Marlins are not just dealing with Weathers’ injury; another right-handed starter, Edward Cabrera, will also start the season on the injured list because of a blister on his right middle finger. This situation further complicates the Marlins’ rotation as they prepare for the season ahead.
Outfielder’s Absence
In addition, outfielder Jesús Sánchez is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season after suffering a left oblique strain during spring training, adding to the Marlins’ challenges as they aim for a successful season.
