Jai Lucas Named Head Coach of Miami Hurricanes Basketball
The University of Miami has appointed Jai Lucas as the new head coach of its men’s basketball program. Lucas’s hiring comes after a preliminary agreement was reached almost two weeks prior. His five-year contract has recently been finalized, and he will be officially introduced at a press conference scheduled for Monday in Coral Gables.
Lucas’s Background and Vision
Lucas, who has served as the associate head coach at Duke University for three seasons, is renowned for his recruiting skills. “I am incredibly grateful and honored to be the next head coach at the University of Miami,” Lucas stated. “Miami has everything you need to compete at the highest level — elite academics, a passionate fan base, and a commitment to excellence in athletics. Beyond that, the city of Miami has a rich culture and energy that makes this an incredibly special place.”
Leadership Transition
Lucas steps in to replace Jim Larrañaga, who unexpectedly stepped down in December. Bill Courtney, previously an associate head coach for the team, has been managing the program on an interim basis and is set to coach the Hurricanes in their final game of the season against N.C. State.
Miami Program’s Recent Struggles
Currently, Miami’s basketball team faces significant challenges, holding a record of 6-24 overall and just 2-17 in the ACC, which puts them on the brink of a new low in program history. The Hurricanes, fresh off a Final Four appearance two years ago, have experienced a dramatic downturn, winning only 10 out of their last 49 games.
Recruiting and Future Goals
Lucas has already proven to be a strong recruiter, successfully signing twin brothers Cameron and Cayden Boozer, who were among the top prospects last fall. “We are fortunate to have Jai join us in Coral Gables,” said Dan Radakovich, the athletic director for the Hurricanes. “It is clear that Jai understands what it takes to compete on and off the floor in this new era of college basketball and he sees the great potential at Miami.”
Next Steps for Lucas and Miami
As Lucas prepares to leave Duke, where the Blue Devils are vying for a strong position in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, he will shift focus to revamping the Miami program. With the transfer portal opening on March 24, timely recruitment will be crucial for rebuilding the roster.
“My family and I can’t wait to get to Coral Gables and get to work,” Lucas added, highlighting his eagerness to begin this new chapter.
