Sweet Indulgences: A Dessert Tour of South Florida
For those who crave something sweet, South Florida offers a delightful selection of unique dessert spots that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. From imaginative ice cream creations to themed donuts and sinfully good breads, here’s a closer look at three local favorites that make dessert a must.
Jolly Ice Parlor: A Wonderland of Ice Cream
At Jolly Ice Parlor, traditional ice cream flavors are elevated with a twist. This vibrant shop prides itself on its playful approach to ice cream presentation.
“What sets us aside from everybody else is, we like to decorate everything and be obnoxious with the decorations,” says Crystal Diaz.
Offering over ten unique ice cream flavors and an array of toppings, it’s no wonder that Jolly Ice Parlor is quickly becoming a highlight of the South Florida dessert scene. Among their most sought-after flavors are:
- Grape Nut: A Caribbean favorite.
- Cookies and Cream: A classic choice.
- Cookie Monster: A crowd-pleaser that’s particularly popular.
Before you leave, be sure to try their signature Jolly Bowl, which combines Italian ice with a shot of your choice of liquor.
“It’s a bowl with Italian ice, and we put a shot of your choice — it could be white or dark liquor,” explains Crystal Diaz. “And the adults love it, because they like to bring their kids here, and instead of them just sitting here being bored, they’ll drink as well.”
FranCo’s Donuts: Touchdowns of Flavor
FranCo’s Donuts in South Miami takes the donut game to the next level with its extensive selection of creatively themed donuts.
“FranCo’s Donuts is a family-owned and operated donut business, and we’re known for our football-themed donut stand,” shares Frank Crawford.
The standout flavors include:
- All-American: A cookies and cream delight.
- Super Bowl: A colorful sprinkles donut that kids adore.
- Strawberry Shortcake: Another popular option that brings joy to many.
With approximately 250 specialty donut varieties, customers can visit FranCo’s every week for three years and still discover new flavors!
“They cost $6 for a half-dozen, $12 for a dozen and $20 for a bucket,” adds Frank Crawford.
Wicked Bread Co.: The Art of Cinnamon Bread
Wicked Bread Co. in Plantation specializes in gourmet cinnamon bread, with new flavors introduced each month to tempt customers anew.
“For the month of March, we have the Berry Witch Project, a mixed berry compote made up of blackberry, raspberry, strawberry and blueberries,” explains Eddie Diaz.
In April, the bakery will offer its featured creation:
- Magic Wishing Apple Bread: Cinnamon bread topped with apple pie filling and caramel drizzle.
This bread aims to capture the essence of the most enjoyable part of a cinnamon roll, delivering a flavorful experience.
“For the most part, it’s like eating the middle of a cinnamon roll, just over and over and over again,” shares Eddie Diaz.
