Heroic Rescue at Haulover Inlet

In a dramatic incident at Haulover Inlet, a 23-year-old man was saved from potential tragedy after falling off his personal watercraft and becoming unconscious in the water. The event occurred on Thursday afternoon and quickly drew the attention of nearby Good Samaritans.

Rescue Efforts Begin

Charles Hansen, the owner of Fast Response Marine Towing & Salvage, was one of the first to arrive at the scene. He described the urgency of the situation, noting that the victim was face down in the water for approximately 20 seconds before his friend was able to pull him clear of the surface.

“I arrived on scene probably within like 30 seconds,” said Hansen. “The guy was struggling to keep his buddy’s head up out of the water. He’s completely unconscious.” Despite the challenging conditions in the rough waters of Haulover Cut, the friend remained with the victim, making a heroic effort to maintain his friend’s safety.

Swift Action Taken

Videographers from various media outlets, including Miami Famous, BoatSnaps, and Wavy Boats, documented the rescue, highlighting the frantic yet determined attempts to save the young man. Hansen recalled the critical moments when he reached the victim and began his rescue operation.

“Luckily, we were able to snatch him up on board,” Hansen explained. However, once on the boat, he was uncertain of the victim’s condition. “I wasn’t even sure if he was breathing, to be honest. I just wanted to get him to emergency medical services as fast as possible,” he stated.

Medical Assistance and Aftermath

After securing the victim, Hansen handed over the rescue efforts to the Miami-Dade Fire and Ocean Rescue team, who transported the young man to Aventura Hospital. Fortunately, he sustained only a shoulder injury and a concussion, which Hansen described as a fortunate outcome amid the circumstances.

A Grateful Perspective

Reflecting on the incident, Hansen remarked, “He’s very lucky, very lucky.” He also noted that he towed the watercraft back after the rescue, emphasizing the significance of safety on the water.

This incident underscores the importance of swift action and community support in emergency situations, showcasing how Good Samaritans can make a pivotal difference in critical moments.
