Driven by Music: Alex Rodriguez’s Journey with the Euphonium
A Unique Talent Emerges
At Palm Beach Central High School, student Alex Rodriguez has made a name for himself in the band, showcasing remarkable musical talent despite playing with one hand. His latest achievement? Winning a specially adapted euphonium, an instrument he describes as having “such a beautiful sound.”
The Euphonium: A Perfect Fit
The euphonium, similar to a tuba, typically has a configuration requiring the use of both hands—three valves operated with one hand and one with the other. For Alex, who was born without a left hand, this presented a challenge.
“But as you know, I don’t have a left hand,” Alex explained. “So how this instrument is for me is all the valves are in the front while still being at the professional level.” This adaptation allows him to compete at a level that he had long aspired to reach.
Support from the Community
Alex’s journey took a significant step forward when he won the adapted euphonium from the Palm Beach Symphony. Bryce Seliger, a representative of the symphony, noted, “Alex stood out to us from the beginning. He is musically gifted. He’s an exceptional player.”
His band director, James Yaques, shared Alex’s impressive trajectory: “He came in as a very average ninth grader, and he said one of his goals was to make our top band, which usually the kids don’t make until eleventh or twelfth grade. And he achieved that goal as a tenth grader.” Yaques highlighted Alex’s talent, noting he has also been recognized as an “all-county euphonium player.”
A Source of Inspiration
For Alex, having the right instrument is everything. He noted, “Without this instrument, I’ve not been able to, like, compete at the same level or just anything. It’s just this instrument is everything.” His story serves as motivation for many, demonstrating how perseverance and passion can drive people to pursue their dreams, regardless of obstacles.
Looking Ahead
As a senior, Alex is already making strides towards his future, auditioning for various colleges and music programs. In addition to his music, he also boasts a black belt in karate, showcasing his diverse talents and determination.
