Lauderdale Lakes Man Severely Burned in Boat Fire
LAUDERDALE LAKES, FLA. — A man in Lauderdale Lakes is facing a long and challenging recovery after a fire erupted from a boat in his driveway, resulting in serious injuries. Jean Roseau, 40, is currently being treated for extensive burns at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
The Incident
On Thursday evening, while working on his boat, which was parked in the couple’s driveway, Roseau encountered a catastrophic incident. Witnesses reported that the vessel quickly ignited and transformed into a large fireball.
Video footage taken by onlookers displayed thick clouds of black smoke ascending into the sky as the flames raged. Eyewitness Maureen Charles recounted, “I ran out, and the fire was, like, it was coming across here very fast, and it was very massive.”
A Call for Help
Roseau’s fiancée, Monique Evans, was inside their home when she heard a loud explosion. In her words, “I ran out ’cause he was screaming for me. ‘Babe, babe, I’m on fire,’ and then I could see the fire on his shirt.” Responding quickly, she and other residents attempted to assist him as the flames quickly spread, damaging not only the boat but also a section of their home on Northwest 33rd Street.
Cause of the Fire
Prior to the explosion, Roseau noticed a gas leak on his boat. Evans explained, “First he said that he just saw a little leak of gas, and then he came inside… I think he took, like, the blower to probably help clean it or whatever, and then that’s when I heard the loud boom.”
Recovery and Support
As a result of the intense fire, Roseau suffered third-degree burns on more than 40% of his body. Evans expressed gratitude for his recovery efforts, stating, “We’re happy that he’s breathing on his own.” The couple’s family has established a GoFundMe page to assist with medical expenses incurred during his treatment.
Safety Recommendations
In light of the harrowing experience, Evans urges fellow boat owners to prioritize safety. She advises, “Don’t try to work on a boat by yourself. Don’t try to fix anything that you’re not familiar with. Get someone that’s trained.” She highlighted that although Roseau is skilled in mechanics, certain tasks require professional assistance to prevent similar incidents.
Investigations Underway
Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue crews are actively investigating the cause of the fire to prevent future occurrences. Their prompt response was crucial in preventing the blaze from spreading to neighboring properties.
For those wishing to support Roseau during this difficult time, donations can be made through a designated GoFundMe page.
