MIAMI (WSVN) – The FBI Miami Field Office is warning holiday shoppers to remain vigilant against scams targeting personal information and money during the 2024 busy season.
According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, more than $92 million was lost to undelivered and missed payments this past holiday season.
“The FBI is reminding consumers to be vigilant and protect themselves from criminals looking to get rich this holiday season,” Special Agent Jeffrey B. Veltri said in a press release. “Watch out for these plans. If they sound too good to be true, they probably are. Avoid scammers and enjoy your vacation. ”
The FBI has highlighted several scams to be aware of.
Online shopping scams: Scammers offer transactions through phishing emails and advertisements. Social media scams: Scammers use social media sites that appear to offer coupons or gift cards. These scams often lure consumers into online surveys designed to steal personal information. Smartphone app scams: Scammers design mobile apps disguised as free games to steal personal information. Work-from-home scams: Scammers use websites and social media posts offering to work from home. house. Convenience attracts attention, but fraudulent intent may exist. Gift card fraud: Victims receive a spoofed email, phone call, or text message asking them to purchase multiple gift cards for personal or business reasons. Charity fraud: Criminals set up fake charities. They profit from individuals who believe they are donating to legitimate organizations.
The FBI urges consumers to research retailers, use secure payment methods, and monitor shipping details closely.
