MIAMI (WSVN) – A family of 11 was left heartbroken when a fire destroyed their Miami home in the middle of the holidays.
Miami Fire Rescue responded to a call of a fire along the 2900 block of South Federal Highway just after 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Upon arrival, crews found a single-family home with heavy smoke and flames.
Surveillance cameras at the home showed a family running to the house after hearing the fire.
Jose Davila said he and his family tried to put out the fire, but the flames got too big.
“We tried to put water in with a hose, but there was too much water,” Davila said. “I couldn’t see anything, I couldn’t breathe. Then the fire department arrived and they did their job.”
Surveillance video shows firefighters quickly putting out the fire.
Officials said a search was conducted for any additional occupants and all were determined to be safe.
Within minutes, the fire was extinguished and all surrounding buildings were protected from further damage.
The fire caused extensive damage to the house, including melting home appliances and destroying furniture.
Firefighters were able to retrieve the family’s Christmas presents, but the family is thankful no one was hurt.
“Our biggest concern is our little children, especially my niece, my two brothers, and my nephew because they have special needs,” Davila said.
He said Christmas Eve was always tough for him and his family.
“It’s a difficult situation. My grandfather passed away on Christmas Eve, so we always go through emotional moments, but going through this on top of that is not easy,” he said.
It’s especially difficult for them now that their homes have been destroyed.
Davila said 11 family members live in the duplex, four of them children.
He said his niece’s quick thinking saved their lives.
“My niece said she was taking a nap and was asleep and she smelled something,” he said.
She was the one who asked for help.
“I’m really proud of her reaction in that situation, because even as an adult, it’s hard to imagine being in that situation,” Davila said.
The family believes the fire started in a small play area in the house, but firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.
We contacted the American Red Cross to help with their needs.
However, people have started donating money to a GoFundMe account created by the family. They raised over $19,000 in two days.
“Words cannot express how grateful we are for their generosity and empathy, because this is what we need at this moment,” Davila said.
Money donated to GoFundMe will help families with their immediate needs, including temporary housing, clothing, and basic necessities. If you would like to donate, please click here.
