Legal Troubles Mount for Former Condo Board President
The situation surrounding Gregori Arzumanov, the former president of the Turnberry on the Green condo board in Aventura, has taken a serious turn. Recently, Arzumanov was named in a lawsuit filed by his former attorney’s law firm, adding to his growing list of legal challenges.
A few months ago, the luxury high-rise was thrust into the headlines following Arzumanov’s arrest, where he was escorted out of the building in handcuffs. This incident left residents shocked and concerned about the leadership of their community. Resident Robert Hills, who purchased a condo in May after renting for three years, expressed his dismay: “It’s kind of embarrassing to see the person who’s been leading your building be handcuffed and hauled out of here.”
Accusations of Misconduct
Arzumanov, 63, is facing allegations of embezzling over $1.5 million from the condo association. Authorities describe his role at the building as a comprehensive takeover, effectively intertwining his duties as president, property manager, and chief engineer.
Aventura Police Chief Michael Bentolila remarked, “It was a complete takeover. I’ve never seen anything like this in my entire career.” These serious charges have raised numerous questions and concerns among residents about the management and oversight of their community funds.
Legal Representation and New Lawsuit
Adding further complexity to his legal troubles, a substantial payment issue has surfaced related to Arzumanov’s defense. A check totaling $15,000 was issued from the condo association’s account to the law firm Rabin & Lopez, P.A., which previously represented Arzumanov. The check’s memo indicated this money was intended for “Legal retainer – Aventura PD.”
Sam Rabin, the attorney who briefly represented Arzumanov, confirmed his association with the client beginning in April 2023 but is no longer representing him. He has since filed a lawsuit against Arzumanov, claiming that he owes the firm $54,785, asserting that a portion of this sum should rightfully be returned to the condo association.
Community Reaction
Residents are understandably upset about the potential misuse of their association fees. Robert Hills shared his concerns, stating, “I think it’s very upsetting to all of us to know that funds were taken from us to pay for his situation that he created.”
The newly formed condo board is optimistic about recovering the $15,000. They expressed that they expect the funds to be reimbursed in light of the developing legal circumstances.
Next Steps
As the legal proceedings unfold, Rabin has indicated that he would refund the money if the check were found to have been issued improperly. However, this has yet to materialize.
The community remains vigilant, watching closely as these developments unfold, with many residents feeling the weight of the situation and its implications for their living environment.
