In a recent virtual appearance at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom conference, entrepreneur Elon Musk expressed his views on the need for privatizing various public services, specifically the U.S. Postal Service and Amtrak.
Comparing U.S. Rail Services to Global Standards
Musk stated that it is “kind of embarrassing” that the United States lag behind other nations in passenger rail services, citing the high-speed bullet trains in China as a stark contrast to the current state of U.S. rail travel. He criticized Amtrak as a poor representation of American rail systems, saying, “If you’re coming from another country, please don’t use our national rail. It can leave you with a very bad impression of America.”
The Case for Privatization
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO emphasized the potential benefits of privatization, arguing that creating a feedback loop through market competition could lead to significant improvements in services. “I think we should privatize anything that can be privatized,” Musk noted, adding that without the possibility of bankruptcy, there is little incentive for enhancement. He also acknowledged that such changes would require legislative action from Congress.
Musk’s Stance on High-Speed Rail
Historically, Musk has been critical of government-funded high-speed rail projects, particularly in California. His proposal for the Hyperloop emerged out of his frustration with the state’s plans, which he characterized as potentially the “slowest” bullet train at the highest cost per mile. According to biographer Ashlee Vance, Musk aimed to inspire innovation in transportation alternatives through the Hyperloop concept.
