Deputy-Involved Shooting Following Domestic Violence Incident in Riverview

In a domestic violence incident that escalated into a shooting, a 50-year-old man was critically injured after being shot by a Hillsborough County deputy in Riverview, Florida. The encounter occurred early Sunday morning as authorities responded to reports of violence at a residence located in the 10500 block of Lake Montauk Drive.
Details of the Incident
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), Manuel Alvarez allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and initiated a fire within the home. At approximately 3:47 a.m., deputies received a call indicating that Alvarez had set ablaze a fake plant and several items in the bedroom, which were extinguished upon arrival.
Upon their arrival, deputies noted visible injuries on the victim, including a contusion on the side of her face. Sheriff Chad Chronister provided insights into the situation, stating that when officers attempted to reach Alvarez, he threatened them with a firearm while positioned in an upstairs bedroom.
Deputy Response and Shooting Incident
As Deputy Shawn Swinford opened the door to confront Alvarez, he found the man in a “firing position” with a gun drawn. In an immediate response, Swinford discharged his weapon, striking Alvarez twice in the upper torso. Following the shooting, Alvarez was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he underwent surgery.
Background of the Individuals Involved
Authorities reported that Alvarez, who has no prior criminal record, was previously Baker Acted in 2022 by the Tampa Police Department. Meanwhile, Deputy Swinford, who has eight years of law enforcement experience from Indiana, was hired by the HCSO in July 2024. He has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
