AfriKin: Art, Jazz, and Champagne Celebrates Women’s Empowerment
An Evening Dedicated to Celebrating Women
Join us for an extraordinary evening at the Scott Galvin Community Center this Sunday, where the AfriKin event will honor the power and creativity of women through art, music, and culinary delights. This celebration features an all-women art exhibition to commemorate Women’s History Month.
Event Overview
Visitors can expect a sensory-rich experience, as Alfonso Brooks, the founder of AfriKin, emphasizes the importance of celebrating women throughout our lives. “We came here through a woman, so we’re supposed to celebrate women at every interval that we get,” he stated, highlighting the event’s commitment to uplifting women’s contributions to society.
Art Showcase: Diverse Expressions
The event will feature varied artistic expressions, including stained glass art created by artist Jokeeta Savariau. She eloquently compares her medium to human temperament, stating, “A lot of time, I’ll drop a piece, and it won’t crack or break, and then sometimes, barely nicking it, it’ll just crumble.” Savariau’s works often portray Black historical figures and Indigenous themes, aiming for viewers to see reflections of themselves in her pieces.
Live Musical Performances
Attendees will enjoy the smooth sounds of saxophonist Cleo Fox. She aims to resonate with all cultures present, saying, “I like to give everybody a little something.” The music promises to add a vibrant atmosphere to the evening’s festivities.
Culinary Delights from Afro Lounge
Co-hosted with Hollywood’s Afro Lounge, guests will have the chance to indulge in traditional African dishes such as fufu, corned beef, afro rolls, and peanut soup, as emphasized byPatrick Ahorlu, the owner of Afro Lounge: “My vision and my goal here is to make sure everyone in South Florida tries fufu.”
Dress Code: Embrace the Culture
Attendees are encouraged to showcase their best “fabulously African chic” attire, reflecting the vibrant culture the event celebrates. Brooks insists, “How are you gonna show up and not represent the culture?” This emphasis on cultural representation is intrinsic to AfriKin’s mission.
