Pete Buttigieg Announces He Will Not Run for Senate in Michigan

SAUGATUCK, Mich. — Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has confirmed he will not pursue the open Senate seat in Michigan, freeing him to potentially focus on a larger role as the Democratic Party’s candidate for president in 2028.

Considering Future Options

Since departing from his position in the Biden administration at the start of the year, Buttigieg has explored various political avenues. His consideration of the Senate seat comes in light of Democratic Senator Gary Peters’ unexpected announcement that he will not seek reelection in 2026. However, many close allies have advised Buttigieg that running for the Senate could hinder his ambitions for a presidential campaign.

Buttigieg’s Statement

In his social media announcement, Buttigieg expressed his commitment to the political landscape of Michigan, stating, “I care deeply about who Michigan will elect as Governor and send to the U.S. Senate next year, but I have decided against competing in either race.” He further indicated that he has no plans to run for office in 2026.

The Michigan Senate Race Landscape

With Buttigieg stepping aside, the race to succeed Peters is wide open. Michigan is considered a critical battleground for both parties, and the GOP sees this as a prime opportunity; they aim to capture the Senate seat, as indicated by recent developments. Alongside Peters, Senators Tina Smith of Minnesota and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire have also announced their decision to forgo reelection.

Potential Democratic Candidates

Among those expected to enter the race is Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow, who has garnered national attention following a powerful speech on the Senate floor in 2022. Rumors suggest she will announce her candidacy in April. Additionally, other Democratic figures like U.S. Representative Haley Stevens are also contemplating their bids.

Republican Landscape

Historically, Republicans have struggled to secure Senate seats in Michigan in recent years; however, Mike Rogers, who narrowly missed out last fall, is preparing to launch another campaign. This emerges as competition intensifies, particularly given the evolving political dynamics.

Buttigieg’s Political Future

Buttigieg’s previous presidential run in 2020 showcased his abilities to connect with voters as a newcomer on the national stage. His adeptness in communication, as well as a robust digital presence and substantial donor network, could position him favorably in future political endeavors.

Looking Forward

In a statement shared via Substack, Buttigieg outlined his intention to engage with both conventional and digital media. He emphasized a commitment to discussing issues important to Americans, grounded in core values of freedom and democracy. “You’ll be seeing me on familiar platforms and newer ones, developing this vision,” he noted.

As Buttigieg ponders his next steps, the political ramifications for both Michigan and the broader Democratic Party remain significant, particularly in the context of the approaching presidential primary season.
