Traffic Disruptions in Florida Keys Due to Brush Fire
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — On Wednesday morning, traffic resumed along U.S. 1, the primary route to and from the Florida Keys, following a brief closure caused by a brush fire. This incident significantly impacted motorists who were attempting to access the island chain.
Current Road Conditions
Despite the reopening of U.S. 1, Kristen Livengood, spokesperson for Monroe County, confirmed that Card Sound Road remains closed as fire crews continue their efforts to contain the flames. As of now, there is no estimated time for when this route will be reopened.
Background of the Incident
The fire ignited on Tuesday afternoon on the mainland near Card Sound Road, approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers) southwest of Miami. The proximity of the fire created smoky conditions, leading authorities to initially shut down U.S. 1, which later resumed operations that same evening.
Fire Containment Efforts
Efforts to control the blaze are being undertaken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service. Residents and visitors have been advised to limit outdoor activities, particularly those with respiratory issues, due to the evacuation of smoke in the air.
Seasonal Challenges
Brush fires are not uncommon in South Florida, particularly during the dry season, which occurs until mid-May. The region has also experienced windy conditions this week, contributing to the challenges faced by firefighters.
