Texas Teen with Brain Cancer Strives to Break Law Enforcement Record
WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — Thirteen-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel, who is bravely fighting brain cancer, took a significant step in his quest to be honored by 1,000 law enforcement agencies, recently getting sworn in as an honorary deputy sheriff in Polk County, Florida.
Recognition from Polk County
During a heartfelt ceremony held on Friday, DJ received a warm welcome from the community, evidenced by the standing ovation he received. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd highlighted DJ’s aspiration, stating, “He always wanted to get sworn in at the best, and that’s why he’s here with us today.” DJ humorously responded, “Mm-hmm, ’cause that’s exactly what I was going to say,” showcasing his spirited personality.
A Growing Honorary Title Collection
This honorary title adds to DJ’s impressive list, which includes his recent acknowledgment as a Secret Service agent of the United States, granted in March. DJ expressed his surprise with the recognition, saying, “Great. I was not expecting all this stuff.” His ambition has inspired him to pursue becoming a police officer and make his mark in the Guinness Book of World Records after surpassing 900 sworn-in titles.
Defying the Odds
DJ was initially diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, when doctors estimated he had only five months to live. Since then, he has shown extraordinary resilience, undergoing more than a dozen brain surgeries. His current participation in a research study has brought renewed hope to his family and supporters.
“I do everything now to try and make the world a better place and just use his story to help somebody out,” said his father, Thodis Daniel. He described the impact of their journey, noting, “I don’t know how many people we’ve been able to touch with our story that may have given up, but the fight is only harder if you believe that, so you’ve always got to stay faithful.”
A Journey Ahead
With a record-breaking goal in sight, DJ and his family are preparing for an extensive tour to visit law enforcement agencies across the United States in the coming months. “I’ll keep going until my gas tank runs out, and that’s when God calls you home,” DJ expressed. He shared a poignant moment from his journey: during his 11th surgery, he felt a divine calling, stating, “God told me I was one of his angels, and I’m doing God’s work.” After his 12th surgery, he remarked, “He gave me my wings, but he told me, ‘I’m going to take these back; you don’t get these until you graduate the school of life.’”
Setting Records Beyond Goals
DJ’s accomplishments extend beyond his current goal; he holds records for receiving the most “keys to the city” and the most “proclamation days,” further showcasing the profound impact he has made within his community.
This inspiring journey not only exemplifies DJ’s personal battle against cancer but also serves as a powerful reminder of resilience, hope, and the spirit of community support.
