First Trailer for ‘Rust’ Released After Tragic Incident
The much-anticipated trailer for the film Rust was unveiled, coming over three years after the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the film’s set in New Mexico.
Background of the Incident
Alec Baldwin, who stars in and co-produces Rust, faced involuntary manslaughter charges linked to the shooting incident that occurred during filming. However, these charges were dismissed just three days into the trial in 2024 due to issues regarding evidence that prosecutors failed to provide to the defense.
Trailer Details
The newly released trailer portrays Baldwin as Harland Rust, an outlaw who rides through the rugged landscapes of 1880s Kansas, embarking on a journey filled with gunfights and evasion. In the footage, he expresses to his on-screen grandson, Lucas McCalister (played by Patrick Scott McDermott), that, “Some things in this life you can’t get back, I reckon.”
Film Synopsis
Rust tells the story of an orphaned boy, Lucas, who inadvertently kills a rancher and faces execution. Harland Rust intervenes to rescue his grandson from the gallows, leading them on a perilous escape across the wilderness while evading a determined U.S. Marshal named Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a merciless bounty hunter known as ‘Preacher’ (Travis Fimmel).
Production Insights
Halyna Hutchins, who tragically lost her life in the incident, is credited as the cinematographer, alongside Bianca Cline, who took over when production resumed. Hutchins’ husband, Matthew Hutchins, is listed as an executive producer for the film. According to NPR, profits from the movie will be directed to Hutchins and their son, Andros, pursuant to a settlement reached in a wrongful death lawsuit. Notably, the original producers will not receive any financial returns from the film.
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
During the filming of Rust, Baldwin accidentally discharged a prop gun that had contained a live round, resulting in Hutchins’ death and injuring the director, Joel Souza. While Baldwin pleaded not guilty to the charges of involuntary manslaughter, last year, the film’s armorer, Hannah Gutierrez Reed, was found guilty of the same charge and sentenced to 18 months in prison.
Release Information
Rust is set to premiere in theaters and on Video on Demand (VOD) on May 2, 2025, bringing attention back to the events surrounding the film and its troubled production history.
