WASHINGTON (AP) – Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suffered a fall Saturday while attending an event in Luxembourg with other members of Congress and underwent hip replacement surgery at a U.S. military hospital in Germany.
California Democratic Party spokesman Ian Crager said in a statement that Pelosi, 84, is “recovering well.”
Pelosi thanked the staff at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center and the Luxembourg hospital where she was also treated for their “excellent care and kindness.”
She was traveling to Europe with a bipartisan Congressional delegation commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
Pelosi tripped and fell during the event, breaking her hip, according to people familiar with her injury. He was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Among the visitors was Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), who posted on social media on Friday that he was “praying for a speedy recovery” for Pelosi. On that day, the two congressmen were photographed holding hands in a group photo at the U.S. Embassy in Luxembourg.
Pelosi was first elected in 1987. She served as speaker twice, and although she left the leadership post two years ago, she remained in Congress and was re-elected to represent the San Francisco district in November.
