FORT MYERS, Fla. (WSVN) – Two teenage carjackers were taken into custody Tuesday at an airport runway in Lee County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
FHP said officers learned that the suspect approached the female victim and asked for her keys. Due to the nature of the incident, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Violent Crimes Unit responded in pursuit of the suspect.
FHP officers assisted in locating a stolen vehicle in Fort Myers three hours after the carjacking was reported.
Dashcam footage showed the beginning and end of the dangerous drive.
As FHP officers approached the suspicious vehicle, the driver sped away.
As a result of the ensuing pursuit, the stolen SUV struck several unoccupied vehicles before veering off the road and crashing.
Two teenagers then got out of the damaged vehicle and ran toward Southwest Florida International Airport.
One of the suspects, Felix Marcial Ayala, 16, climbed over a secure barrier onto the tarmac and was arrested along with the driver of the car, a 17-year-old man.
FHP took the driver into custody while Ayala was arrested on the grounds of Southwest Florida International Airport.
Ayala is currently charged with carjacking without a firearm or weapon, trespassing on a critical infrastructure facility, and resisting an officer.
