LONDON (AP) — Elton John says he had a hard time seeing the new musical because he lost his eyesight after contracting an infection.
The singer-songwriter attended the opening night of The Devil Wears Prada in London on Sunday and told the audience: ”
“So it’s hard to watch, but I love to hear it, and it sounded good tonight,” he said.
John, 77, revealed in September that an infection had left him with “limited vision in one eye.” He wrote on Instagram: “It is healing, but the process is very slow and it will take some time for vision to return to the affected eye.”
John wrote the music for The Devil Wears Prada, a stage musical based on the 2006 film about a young journalist who overcomes the glamor and ego of a glossy fashion magazine.
The production, which takes place at London’s Dominion Theatre, stars Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestley, the formidable editor played by Meryl Streep in the film.
Sunday’s gala, a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, featured celebrities including designer Donatella Versace and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, who is rumored to have been the inspiration for Priestley’s character. People from the fashion industry were in attendance.
Winter described the musical as “funny”.
